Laminate Flooring Installation is laying click-together laminate boards as a floating floor over underlay, then finishing the edges with skirting or scotia and transition profiles. You can buy the flooring yourself and pay for fitting only, or ask for supply and installation in one price.

Get the Best QuoteWhat Installation Includes
- Subfloor check. Flatness, cracks, loose tiles and moisture in concrete or screed.
- Moisture barrier. A polyethylene sheet over concrete, unless the underlay includes one.
- Underlay. Rolled out under the boards, unless the boards have underlay attached.
- Laying. Boards clicked together with joints staggered and an expansion gap left at walls and fixed objects.
- Door trimming. Door frames undercut and doors shortened if the new floor is higher.
- Finishing. Skirting or scotia over the expansion gap, and profiles at doorways and other floors.
Steps on Installation Day
- Acclimatise. Boxes are left flat in the room before fitting, for the time the manufacturer specifies.
- Prepare. The floor is cleaned, and high spots or dips are corrected.
- Lay out. The installer plans the board direction and the width of the first and last rows.
- Fit. Rows are clicked in, with the expansion gap kept around the edges.
- Finish. Skirting, scotia and profiles are fitted and the floor is cleaned.

What Affects the Quotation
- Floor area and how many rooms, passages and doorways are involved.
- Layout: straight planks cost less to fit than herringbone or diagonal patterns.
- Subfloor work, such as levelling, crack repairs or removing the old floor.
- Whether the price includes boards, underlay, skirting and profiles.
- Wastage: most installers add 5% to 15% extra boards for cuts.
Where Laminate Should Not Go
Standard laminate is not made for bathrooms, laundries or areas with standing water. Some water-resistant ranges allow kitchens or bathrooms, but only on the terms in the manufacturer's documentation. Laminate is also not the right choice over a damp subfloor that has not been treated.

How long does laminate installation take?
An average room is often done in a day. Larger homes, stairs, levelling or removing an old floor add time.
Can laminate be laid over tiles?
Usually, if the tiles are firm, flat and dry. Hollow or broken tiles must be fixed first.
Why is an expansion gap needed?
Laminate moves slightly with temperature and humidity. Without a gap at walls and fixed objects the floor can lift or buckle.
Do I need to buy extra boards?
Yes. Allow for cut waste, usually 5% to 15% depending on the layout, and keep a few spare boards for future repairs.
