They are not our prices or quotations, and no installer is bound by them. Most sources do not say whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT, underlay, trims, delivery and wastage on every quotation.

How Measuring and Quoting Work

  1. Request. Give your suburb, the rooms, the floor area in m² and what is on the floor now.
  2. Measure. Most installers measure on site and check the subfloor before giving a firm price.
  3. Quote. The quotation should name the product, AC rating, underlay, trims, wastage and VAT.
  4. Compare. Check like with like, then hire the installer you choose, or nobody.

What Affects the Final Price

  • Floor area and the number of rooms, passages and doorways.
  • Product grade and AC rating.
  • Removing the old floor and levelling the subfloor.
  • Layout: herringbone and diagonal patterns cost more to fit.
  • Stairs, skirting and transition profiles.
  • Access, such as parking and stairs to upper-floor flats.

Subfloor, Moisture and Preparation

Cape Town gets most of its rain in winter, when new screeds and slabs dry more slowly. Ask installers how they test moisture, and expect a moisture barrier over concrete. Loose tiles, cracks and dips are fixed before the floor goes down.

Underlay, Expansion Gaps and Finishing

  • Underlay. Foam with a moisture barrier on concrete. Acoustic underlay for upper-floor flats, where body corporate rules often require it.
  • Expansion gap. Left at all walls and fixed objects so the floor can move.
  • Skirting and profiles. New skirting or scotia over the gap, and profiles at doorways and other floors.

Choosing a Floor

Most Cape Town requests are for oak-look planks in light, grey or natural tones. Choose AC3 for bedrooms and AC4 for busy living areas and passages. Use a water-resistant range rated for kitchens if the floor runs into one. Compare styles in the guides to oak laminate flooring, light laminate flooring and water resistant laminate flooring.

Homes and Business Premises

Requests cover houses, flats, rental units, offices and small shops. For offices and shops, see commercial laminate flooring for wear ratings and after-hours work.
